401(k)

A 401(k) is a retirement account your employer offers, funded straight from your paycheck before the money ever hits your bank account. Contributions shrink this year's taxable income, and many employers match part of what you put in — literally free money. For 2026 you can contribute up to $24,500.

Example: Earn $80,000 and contribute 6% ($4,800); a typical 50% employer match adds $2,400 — an instant 50% return.
