Vesting
Vesting is earning the right to keep compensation over time. Employer 401(k) matches and stock grants often vest gradually — typically over 3 to 4 years — and if you leave early, the unvested part evaporates. Always check your vesting schedule before timing a job change; it can be worth serious money.
Example: A $20,000 stock grant vesting over 4 years means you truly own $5,000 more of it each year you stay.
