What is EPF?

The Employees' Provident Fund is India's mandatory retirement savings scheme for the organised sector, run by the EPFO. If your employer has 20 or more employees, you're almost certainly in it: 12% of your basic salary plus dearness allowance (DA) is deducted every month, and your employer matches it with another 12%.

Here's the part most people miss: the employer's 12% is split. Only 3.67% lands in your EPF account — the other 8.33% is diverted to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), which pays you a monthly pension after retirement instead of a lump sum. So each month, 15.67% of your basic+DA flows into the EPF corpus this calculator projects. The EPS pension is a separate benefit and is not included here.

The math behind this calculator

EPFO computes interest monthly on your running balance and credits it once a year. This calculator mirrors that: every month your balance grows by one-twelfth of the annual rate, then the month's contribution (15.67% of that month's basic) is added. Your basic salary compounds upward each year by your salary-growth input.

Monthly EPF credit = 15.67% × monthly basic (12% employee + 3.67% employer EPF share)
Each month: balance = balance × (1 + r/12) + monthly credit

Worked example

Take a basic salary of ₹40,000 a month, no raises, 30 years, at 8.25%. Your monthly EPF credit is ₹6,268 (₹4,800 from you, ₹1,468 as the employer's EPF share). Over 360 months you contribute about ₹22.6 lakh — and the corpus reaches roughly ₹98.3 lakh. Interest does more than triple your money: about ₹75.7 lakh of the final corpus is pure compounding. And because EPF is tax-free after five years of continuous service, that 8.25% behaves like roughly 11–12% pre-tax for someone in the 30% bracket.
